SJHL Technology Tip

We are always looking for ways to be faster and more efficient in our work. One way people do this is to not take time away from the keyboard to use their mouse when working in programs such as QuickBooks. However, figuring out how to do certain tasks from the keyboard can be tricky. You may already know that Ctrl+C will copy text and Ctrl+P will paste that text somewhere else. The question is, "How can I access all of the right-click commands when I am in 'keyboard mode'?"

The answer is right under your nose.

Application key
Look at your keyboard. See that rarely-used, no-one-knows-what- it's-for key next to the Ctrl key (on most PC keyboards)? It looks like a dropdown menu with an arrow pointer. (Pictured to the right.) That is the 'Application key'.

Pressing this key will display the selected item's shortcut menu the same as when you right-click with your mouse.

Once the shortcut menu is displayed, use the arrow keys to move through the options and the right arrow key to select sub-menus. Press the Enter key to execute the command.

Although this trick can be used any time, it is especially useful when working in QuickBooks. If you would like to learn more QuickBooks tricks to make your time in the program more efficient, be sure to check out our Wednesday's Workshop every Wednesday from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at our McPherson Office.
