This Means War

Mar 23, 2012

Dig out your pennies because the war has begun, the Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd Penny War! What is a Penny War? Well, a Penny War is a fundraising competition that will help the SJHL Relay for Life team raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Our office has been split into 6 random teams (except the Hutchinson office is their own team due to logistics) and each team will have their own jar. Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters or dollar bills can be placed into any teams jar, even if that particular person is not on that team. The value of any pennies collected by a team counts positively toward that team's total points, while the value of the other coins or dollar bills are subtracted. For example, if you put 10 pennies into the jar of Team 1 and a $10 bill into the jar of Team 2, Team 1 would have 10 points and Team 2 would have negative 1000 points. The team with the most positive points, or least amount of negative points, is the winner.

The teams are set up differently this year, but can partner Chet Buchman defend his win from last year? Last year, over $500 was raised for the SJHL Relay for Life team through the Penny War alone. The jars are set up in our front offices at both the McPherson and Hutchinson office locations. So pick your favorite team, and if you're at either location, you can contribute and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The war will end Monday, April 23rd at noon.

The tally after the first week has Team #6 in the lead with negative 211 points. What that means is that every other team has more negative points than they do, so not one team has positive points. This also means that bigger coins and bills are being dropped into the jars, thus raising more money!

McPherson County's Relay for Life will take place June 1-2, 2012 at Wall Park beginning at 6:00 p.m. SJHL is proud to support the American Cancer Society through this event.
