Sweeties Cupcakes and Cook's Nook
Kellsie and Jonna Corrigan

When you ask most 7th graders what they want to do when they grow up, you don't usually get the answer, "I'm doing it!" Well if you asked McPherson Middle Schooler Kellsie Corrigan, that is exactly the answer you would get.

Pumpkin Spice, Cafe Mocha & Ice Cream SundaeAt 12 years, old Kellsie manages school, homework, swim team, a demanding gymnastics schedule and her own business. A year ago she started making cupcakes, and her hobby has now turned into "Sweeties Cupcakes." Working in the kitchen probably comes pretty natural, as her grandmother Priscilla is the owner of Cook's Nook in McPherson and her mother Jonna now manages the store.

What got Kellsie interested in cupcakes to begin with was her love for shows like "Cake Boss" and "Cupcake Wars." This inspired her to become a baking machine as she began testing different recipes she would find. Jonna said they got to the point where they had so many cupcakes around the house they HAD to start giving them away. People would love them and tell their friends, it began to snowball from there.

Kellsie's cupcakes are now available for purchase, but with her busy schedule she requests all orders be made at least a week in advance by phone. She understands that what she is doing is very special, but she also needs to be a kid and work hard in school. Kellsie has plans to go to college after high school, but has not quite decided what she wants to study. She does know that she wants to eventually open up her own cupcake store.

Cook's Nook - 219 N. Main St., McPherson, KS
Sweeties Cupcakes offers six (6) delicious flavors including red velvet, cookies and cream, pumpkin spice, peanut butter chocolate, cafe mocha and ice cream sundae. Kellsie says what makes her cupcakes so special is the fact that they are made completely from scratch. Jonna helps her with clean-up, but admits Kellsie keeps things pretty tidy when she bakes.

When Kellsie decided she wanted to make this a business, she was challenged by someone at Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC to prove it, and she has done just that. She designed top notch business cards, created a beautiful way to package them and even developed a website. For information on ordering and to view more pictures of her cupcakes, visit her website at http://sweetiescupcakesforyou.webs.com/, but keep in mind she is only one girl…with gymnastics three nights a week.

Kellsie's business sense must be genetic because Cook's Nook has been a staple of McPherson since 1988 when Priscilla opened its doors. At the time, her husband owned a pharmacy next door to her original location and he stayed open late, so this is why Cook's Nook is still open until 8:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. They are open until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and even open Sunday afternoons starting in November through Christmas.

What a lot of people don't know about the Cook's Nook is that they offer free gift wrapping as well as delivery for wedding registries. They will deliver to the church, reception or the bride and groom's home at no charge. You don't have to do a thing after you pick it out!
